Bear - Camping
Bear – Bee-wolves are black,
           But brown ones larger.
           For honey they hope,
           Hassling campers.

Outdoors Education Course Challenge: Young Vikings earn one level for completing 8 hours of outdoors
education.  Many different programs are offered by State and private agencies.  The goal of this course is to
educate youth in the science and relationships of wildlife and their environment. Young Vikings may earn this
level only once.

Wilderness Survival Course Challenge: Young Vikings earn one level for completing 16 hours of wilderness
survival training.  The course work should include first aid, food, shelter, water, travel and the mental
discipline needed for survival.  Many similar types of courses are provided by various organizations.  Young
Vikings may earn this level only once.

Camping I Challenge: Young Vikings earn one level for camping with 1 overnight.  This is a good “first
overnighter” for kids just beginning to become familiarized with camping.  Unlike Camping II and III, this may
be done in the back yard, RVs or “car-camping”.  This allows easy access to ‘civilization’ while teaching the
camping basics such as fire safety, clothing choices and ‘leave no trace’ practices.  If the distance to the
campsite is long, the trip may also qualify for a Hike Challenge.  Many wilderness areas already have lean-tos
and cabins which are permitted for Camping I Challenges.  Young Vikings may earn this level only once.

Camping II Challenge: Young Vikings earn one level for camping with 1 overnight.  They may earn up to four
levels per year for Camping I Challenges.  The amount of camping equipment should be restricted by what the
party can carry to the site.  RVs or “car-camping” are not permitted.  If the distance to the campsite is long,
the trip may also qualify for a Hike Challenge.  Many wilderness areas already have lean-tos the use of which is
permitted.  Cabins do not qualify a Young Viking for a Camping level.

Camping III Challenge: Young Vikings earn one level for camping with 2 overnights.  They may earn up to four
levels per year for Camping II Challenges.  The amount of camping equipment is restricted similarly to Camping
I.  If the distance to the campsite is long, the trip may also qualify for a Hike Challenge.  Many wilderness
areas already have lean-tos the use of which is permitted.  Cabins do not qualify a Young Viking for a Camping
level.
