Plant Identification Challenge: Young Vikings can earn +1 level for learning to identify 20+ types of plants or
trees around them. Create a collection book for leaf samples, seeds and pictures.  If you live in an area where
dangerous plants exist (such as poison ivy), it is a good idea to incorporate them into your lesson, but be
careful handling them!  Young Vikings may only earn this level once.

Hiking Challenge: Young Vikings can earn one level for hiking challenges defined as follows:

a)        Per 8 hours with normal hiking conditions with less than 20% body weight encumbrance,
b)        Per 6 hours with difficult hiking conditions OR with over 20% body weight encumbrance,
c)        Per 4 hours of difficult hiking conditions AND while hiking with over 20% body weight encumbrance.

Other factors may affect your trip and each child is challenged differently.  Contact the Viking Council if you
have questions regarding your Hiking Challenge.  A Young Viking may earn up to 16 levels per year in Hiking.

Land Navigation I Challenge: Young Vikings earn one level for receiving 8 hours of land navigation training.
Break this Challenge up into several sessions.  The classroom portion of the training must include maps &
symbols, map legend, scale, distance azimuths, compass use and magnetic north.  Young Vikings should be able
to identify terrain features and map symbols, find destinations on the map after being given direction,
distance or magnetic reading.  They must be able to mark their destination on a map by crossing a back-
azimuth with a known feature such as a river or roadway.  Young Vikings may only earn this level once.

Land Navigation II Challenge:  Young Vikings earn +1 level for finding 4 out of 5 test points in a guided Land
Navigation practical application test.  Trainers must remain with the Young Viking at all times.  Give them a
map with 5 points of varying difficulty.  Follow them to their destinations which should be marked with a highly
visible banner.  Young Vikings may only earn this level once.

Land Navigation III Challenge:  Young Vikings earn +1 level for finding 4 out of 5 test points in a unguided Land
Navigation practical application test.  The testing field must be enclosed on all four sides with impassable
features such as highways, rivers, etc.  Cell phone or radio contact is mandatory.  A highly visible banner with a
secret numerical code should mark each point of varying difficulty.

GPS Challenge: Young Vikings earn +1 level for learning to use a back country GPS for Land Navigation.  They
should be able to set electronic ‘markers’ or ‘points’ and navigate back to them and to other markers located
on the mapping software.  ‘Geocaching’ is a great example of this.
