Otter - Fishing
Otter – A line and lure,
At lakeside cast.
In waters wishing,
For wiggling fish.
Fishing Course Challenge: Young Vikings earn one level for taking a fishing class totaling 4 hours. If the class
does not meet the required time, the remaining time can be completed by fishing at home. Check with your
State’s local Fish and Wildlife Department as well as sporting outfitters such as Cabella’s or L.L. Bean. Many
offer instructional classes geared for kids. There are four types of fishing: fly fishing, bait fishing (includes
lures in both fresh and saltwater), ice fishing and netting. Young Vikings may earn one level for instruction for
each of the three types of fishing.
Fish Identification Challenge: Young Vikings earn +1 level for successfully identifying 20+ types of fish &
waterborne species around them. Find out from your local State wildlife department what types are in your
area and may offer identification hand outs. If not, make your own scrap book with notes and information
regarding the variety of fish. Take the time to learn about their habits and behaviors. This is especially
important for fish identification while fishing. Young Vikings may only earn this level once.
Fish I Challenge: Young Vikings earn one level for 12 cumulative hours of legal fishing per year for each of the
four types of fishing. Young Vikings should be able to bait and operate gear with only minor guidance.
Fish II Challenge: Young Vikings earn one level for a successful catch of legal and edible fish per year for each
of the four types of fishing. Young Vikings should be able to bait and operate gear without assistance,
including removing the fish from the hook! Young Vikings should honor the catch with a word of praise to it or
thanks to the Gods or Ancestors, etc. Fish should be brought back to the home or community for sharing and
eating.
