Knot Tying I Challenge, Young Vikings earn +1 level for learning the name, to tie and demonstrating the use of
7 knots: square knot, fisherman’s knot, figure 8, rerouted figure 8 or figure 8 bend, overhand safety knots,
water knot, butterfly coil & care. Young Vikings may only earn this level once.
Knot Tying II Challenge, Young Vikings earn +1 level for learning the name, to tie and demonstrating the use of
6 additional knots: Bowline, middle of rope girth hitch, end of rope girth hitch, end of the rope prussic, middle
of the rope prussic, middle of the rope clove hitch, end of the rope clove hitch, Refresh and retest Knot Tying
I. Young Vikings may only earn this level once.
Knot Tying III Challenge, Young Vikings earn +1 level for learning the name, to tie and demonstrating the use
of 6 additional knots. Tensionless anchor, multiple anchors with weight distribution for single direction,
directionless anchors, bowline on a coil, rope safety harness, munter hitch. These knots are used for setting
up safety lines for stream crossing, movement over exposed areas with significant fall hazard, etc. Although
these knots can be practiced at home, you should only attempt these dangerous activities under the guidance
of an expert. Refresh and retest Knot Tying I and II. Young Vikings may only earn this level once.
Z Pulley Challenge: Young Vikings earn +1 level for learning to create and operate a 3 to 1 power Z pulley rope
system with only the use of back country equipment (static rope, carbiners, etc.) Young Vikings may only earn
this level once.
Cross-country Skiing Challenge, Young Vikings earn +1 level per 8 hours of cross-country skiing.
The majority of the area skied may be even and level, however a portion should contain some mixed or varied
terrain features. Young Vikings may earn this level once per year.
Skiing I Challenge, Young Vikings earn +1 level for receiving being able to complete any run classified as a
‘Green Trail’ without falling while using ‘snowplow’ or turning method. Young Vikings may only earn this level
once.
Skiing II Challenge, Young Vikings earn +1 level for receiving being able to complete any run classified as a
‘Blue Trail’ without falling or relying on the snowplow method having learned the ability to turn. Young Vikings
may only earn this level once.
Skiing III Challenge, Young Vikings earn +1 level for receiving being able to complete any run classified as a
‘Black Diamond’ without falling or relying on the snowplow method having learned the ability to turn. The Young
Viking must also ski one “Double Black Diamond” with or without moguls (the “no falling” rule is lift for Double
Black Diamond trails). Young Vikings may only earn this level once.
Rappel Tower Challenge, Young Vikings earn +1 level for rappelling. This Challenge: like many others is
extremely dangerous and must only be done under the qualified instruction of an internationally accredited
climbing school. Under no circumstances should you try to perform this Challenge without expert professional
instruction. Young Vikings may only earn this level once.
Climbing Challenge: Young Vikings earn ++1 level for summiting the Climbing Wall. This Challenge: like many
others is extremely dangerous and must only be done under the qualified instruction of an internationally
accredited climbing school. Under no circumstances should you try to perform this Challenge without expert
professional instruction. Young Vikings may only earn this level once.
Distance Day Hike I Challenge, Young Vikings gain +1 level for a hiking in a single day a distance equaling 5 miles
with elevation gain and while carrying 15-20% of body weight encumbrance. Young Vikings may only earn this
level once.
Distance Day Hike II Challenge, Young Vikings gain +1 level for a hiking in a single day a distance equaling 10
miles with elevation gain and while carrying 15-20% of body weight encumbrance. Vikings may only earn this
level once.
Distance Day Hike III Challenge, Young Vikings gain +1 level for a hiking in a single day a distance equaling 15
miles with elevation gain and while carrying 15-20% of body weight encumbrance. Vikings may only earn this
level once.
Extended Watercraft Voyage I Challenge, Young Vikings gain +1 level for an extending watercraft voyage
resulting in 2 days of waterborne adventure and one overnight camping. Equipment for camping must be part
of the boat’s cargo and the campsite remote. Young Vikings may earn this award once per year for up to three
years.
Extended Watercraft Voyage II Challenge, Young Vikings gain +1 level for an extending watercraft voyage
resulting in 3 days of waterborne adventure and 2 over nights spent camping. Equipment for camping must be
part of the boat’s cargo and the campsite remote. Young Vikings may earn this award once per year for up to
three years.
Extended Watercraft Voyage III Challenge, Young Vikings gain +1 level for an extending watercraft voyage
resulting in 4 days of waterborne adventure and 3 over nights spent camping. Equipment for camping must be
part of the boat’s cargo and the campsite remote. Young Vikings may earn this award once per year for up to
three years.
Snow Shoeing Challenge, Young Vikings earn one level for snow shoeing as defined below:
a) Per 8 hours with normal hiking conditions with less than 20% body weight encumbrance,
b) Per 6 hours with difficult hiking conditions OR with over 20% body weight encumbrance,
c) Per 4 hours of difficult hiking conditions AND while hiking with over 20% body weight encumbrance.
Many experienced outdoors people become seriously injured or killed while undertaking this activity. Only
attempt this Challenge under the guidance of an expert.
Winter Camping Challenge, Young Vikings earn one level for camping with 1 overnight in winter conditions. They
may earn up to four levels per year for Camping I Challenges. The amount of camping equipment should be
restricted by what the party can carry to the site. RVs or “car-camping” are not permitted. If the distance
to the campsite is long, the trip may also qualify for a Hike Challenge. Many wilderness areas already have a
lean-to, the use of which is permitted. Cabins do not qualify a Young Viking for a Camping level. As with all
other Challenges in the Wolf Skill Family, hiking and camping in the winter is a very dangerous activity
requiring highly specialized equipment.
Extended Camping, Camping III Challenge, Young Vikings earn one level for camping with 3 over nights. They
may earn up to four levels per year for Camping II Challenges. The amount of camping equipment is restricted
similarly to Camping I. If the distance to the campsite is long, the trip may also qualify for a Hike Challenge.
Many wilderness areas already have a lean-to, the use of which is permitted. Cabins do not qualify a Young
Viking for a Camping level.
Sky diving, white water rafting, para sailing, falconry, spelunking, etc. – We have no idea what is involved in
this stuff. If you do it with your kids, tell us about it!
